It’s never happened before so the impact of a prosecutor’s move to charge a former president with a crime remains uncertain.
But former congressman Trey Gowdy, now a commentator for Fox News, has a warning.
It’s that the agenda Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg is pursuing against President Trump, charges that federal authorities and election officials both rejected, could bring down the nation.
“Now we’re a nation where politics reigns supreme,” Gowdy said in a commentary. “The end justifies the means. Use the system to reward friends and punish foes. If this persists, the greatest experiment in self-governance the world has ever known will surely fail.”
The case involves claims by a porn star and a lawyer-now-convicted felon that Trump paid the porn star to be quiet about a relationship she claims the two had.
At the Gateway Pundit was the explanation that when Bragg took office, he boasted of plans to ignore a lot of crimes. But not those he claims Trump did.
Gowdy’s comments:
On his first day in office, New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced all the crimes he would not prosecute. The person elected as the top law enforcement official had a long list of laws he didn’t respect enough to follow. He substituted his politics for the rule of law because that’s what so-called progressive prosecutors do. And there was nary a word of dissent. On the left, felonies would be downgraded. Serious cases dismissed or pled down. Prison terms would rarely be solved. Alvin Bragg was a social engineer masquerading as a prosecutor.
To some on the left, showing a photo ID to vote is antidemocratic, but apparently not a prosecutor who ignores the law. And yet we have finally stumbled upon the one crime worth the full weight of Alvin Bragg’s office. Forget about guns and robbery and acts of violence. What really gets his attention is paying someone to be quiet about sex. To be clear, Alvin Bragg will not prosecute people who pay for sex. That’s one of the crimes he promised to ignore. To him, you can pay someone for sex in New York and get away with it, but God forbid you to pay someone to be quiet about it afterward.
The demise of our country will be in direct proportion to how politicized our justice system remains. Our justice system should be where we go to escape politics. A place where both friend and foe are afforded fairness and due process, where nothing matters except the law and the facts. It takes no character or courage to be fair to your friends. The question is, can you be fair to your opponents?
Alvin Bragg decided the law was no match for his politics. He didn’t care what the law was when he took office. And when you ignore the law, you give license to others to ignore the facts. And when you ignore the law and the facts, you don’t have a justice system. And if you don’t have a justice system, you don’t have a country. May justice be done, though the heavens fall. That used to be the aspiration, justice above all else. We were once a nation of laws and not merely men and women. Now we’re a nation where politics reigns supreme. The end justifies the means. Use the system to reward friends and punish foes. If this persists, the greatest experiment in self-governance the world has ever known will surely fail.
The Kansas City Star reported Josh Hawley and Eric Schmitt, both senators from Missouri, had concerns about the leftist agenda of Bragg.
“The reported upcoming arrest of President Trump by hyper-partisan Soros prosecutor Alvin Bragg is some Third World Banana Republic lunacy and a very, very dangerous road to go down,” Schmitt said on social media. “Indictments, investigations, and incarceration to settle political scores show a deep contempt for the rule of law.”:
Hawley said, “The Democrats used the FBI against parents, they used the FBI against Catholics, they used Big Tech against vaccine critics & anyone who questioned them. Now they want to arrest Trump, their leading political opponent. They are the banana republic party.”
The Washington Examiner reported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a chief competitor to Trump for the GOP’s 2024 nomination, although not yet announced, said Bragg’s record shows he’s using his office to “impose a political agenda.”
“The Manhattan district attorney is a Soros-funded prosecutor, so he, like other Soros-funded prosecutors, weaponizes their office to impose a political agenda on society at the expense of the rule of law and public safety,” DeSantis said. “He has downgraded over 50% of the felonies to misdemeanors. He says he doesn’t even want to have jail time for the vast vast majority of crime, and what we’ve seen in Manhattan is we’ve seen the crime rate go up and citizens being less safe.”
He also charged Bragg with weaponizing his office for leftists, by ignoring rime cases while hunting for something about Trump.
“I don’t know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair. I can’t speak to that, but what I can speak to is that if you have a prosecutor who is ignoring crimes happening every single day in his jurisdiction and he chooses to [go] back many, many years ago to try to use something about porn star hush money payments, that is an example of pursuing a political agenda and weaponizing the office, and I think that is fundamentally wrong,” DeSantis said.
