Biden Visits Uvalde, Tells People Yelling “Do Something!”, “We Will”

Joe and Jill Biden visited Uvalde, Texas Sunday to pay respects to the victims, families and first responders of Tuesday’s mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that killed 19 children and two teachers. The gunman, 18-year-old Uvalde resident Salvador Ramos was killed by fed up Border Patrol agents who ignored stand down orders after an hour long delay. (The Justice Department announced Sunday it is opening an investigation into the police response.)

There are ongoing negotiations among a bipartisan group of Senators on gun control measures in the wake of Tuesday’s school massacre, with a goal of a compromise deal by June 6. The White House said this week Biden is staying out of the negotiations. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has given his blessing to lead GOP negotiator Sen. John Cornyn (TX).

The Bidens are spending the day in Uvalde, visiting the memorial in front of the school, attending church, meeting with families and first responders. There are no plans for Biden to give a speech.

Videos from the day show Biden and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) being called by gathered crowds to “do something!” Biden answered, “We will.”

While Biden is in Uvalde, Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice posted a White House statement listing federal services available for those affected by the mass shootings in Uvalde and Buffalo this month, “In the wake of the abhorrent attacks on Uvalde and Buffalo, we are mobilizing the full resources of the federal government to help these shattered communities recover. See below for victim services, mental health support, food assistance, and more:”

A local reporter, Stella Chavez of KERA-TV, told CNN on Sunday that Biden’s visit to Uvalde was stoking a lot of outrage, reported the Washington Examiner:

“I think it depends on who you ask,” Chavez said during an appearance on Reliable Sources. “I think, for the most part, the families who were affected want to focus on their loved ones who were killed. And I think having the leader of our country come here and express, you know, his condolences is important to them. But I also know, I’ve heard people say, you know, now is not the time for him to come here.”

Asked why that is, Chavez said, “I think some people are concerned about politicizing this event. And I’ve heard a lot of outrage from people. But I’ve also heard from folks who say, ‘I don’t want to focus on that, on what could have happened, what should’ve happened, I just want to focus on the kids.’ So I would just say it depends on who you ask. But I do think it’s significant that he’s coming here and especially so soon after another similar trip to Buffalo where a horrible mass shooting also happened.”

Townhall reported Uvalde supported President Trump in 2020 with 57 percent of the vote.

“In 2020, 57 percent of Ulvade residents voted for President Trump. Its own mayor, a Republican, Don McLaughlin called Biden’s presidency a “total failure” and his border policy a “clown show.” “

By the way, the pro-gun control Biden was protected by plenty of guns on Sunday.
