Reports have surfaced, indicating that elements within the establishment are purportedly laying the groundwork for a military coup against former President Donald Trump in the event of his reelection, highlighting the profound concerns surrounding the potential return of Trump to the highest office.
The plot, reportedly in its early stages, is framed around the fear that Trump, if victorious in a reelection bid, could reshape the administrative state by dismantling the influence of unelected bureaucrats. According to NBC News, the alleged coup would be portrayed as Trump transforming the nonpartisan U.S. military into a tool for his political agenda.
The reported coup strategy involves legal action against Trump and secretive planning to thwart any attempts to expand presidential power, potentially by influencing the military to align with political objectives.
Mary McCord, executive director of the Institution for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at Georgetown Law, stated, “We’re already starting to put together a team to think through the most damaging types of things that he [Trump] might do so that we’re ready to bring lawsuits if we have to.”
Amidst the allegations, Representative Adam Smith (D-WA) warned of Trump’s potential abuse of power, saying, “He’s going to be one creative motherf—– when it comes to trying to figure out how to abuse it [power]. Whatever your guess is, open up your imagination a little more.”
Former Republican senator and defense secretary William Cohen expressed concern, labeling Trump a “clear and present danger to our democracy” and highlighting the risk of living under a dictatorship.
While Republicans strongly criticize the reported plot, deeming it unconstitutional, accusations of Democrats planning to use the military to influence the 2024 election and prevent a peaceful transition of power have also surfaced. The narrative underscores the deeply polarized nature of American politics and the contentious battle between Trump and the deep state.
