Special Counsel Clears the Air on Hunter Biden Investigation

On Tuesday, Special Counsel David Weiss testified before Congress that “political considerations played no part” in the decisions he has made over the course of his investigation into Hunter Biden.

Fox News reports that Weiss, who appeared before the House Judiciary Committee for a transcribed interview, further claimed that he was not “blocked” or “prevented from pursuing charges” in his probe into Joe Biden’s son, which has included scrutinizing his failure to pay taxes as well as a firearms violation.

Weiss said his intention during the hearing was to address “misunderstandings about the scope” of his investigation’s “authority to decide where, when, and whether to bring charges.” He also noted that his testimony made him “the first Special Counsel to testify before the submission of the Special Counsel report.”

Weiss said that, while he is currently “in the midst of conducting an ongoing investigation and prosecution” and thus “limited as to what I can say at this point,” he nevertheless declared that he “will be able to share more information” when his official report is released.

Weiss’s original investigation of Hunter Biden, back when he was still a U.S. Attorney, had previously indicted Hunter on charges related to tax evasion and the firearms charge. The first son and his team initially agreed to a deal that included him pleading guilty in exchange for a reduced sentence, but the deal collapsed in the courtroom at the last minute, leading to Biden changing his plea to not guilty. Shortly thereafter, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Weiss as Special Counsel to continue his investigation with greater authority.

But whistleblowers have since claimed that Weiss was denied previous requests to be elevated to Special Counsel status. Furthermore, there has been speculation that Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) had repeatedly and actively interfered with Weiss’ investigations in order to soften any possible punishments for the president’s son.

“Throughout this investigation, the career prosecutors on my team and I have made decisions based on the facts and the law,” said Weiss. “Political considerations played no part in our decision-making.”
